Paul is continuing to show remarkable improvement! He took several walks today and made it all the way to the other side of the unit! He is strong and steady on his feet. He is also experiencing very little pain. He is also only getting pain medication through his epidural and has not used his “pain button” all day. So it’s been slow and steady improvement!
They removed the central line from his neck and just put 2 IV lines in his arm. Since they are using different, less potent medications now the central line really isn’t necessary and can be a bit uncomfortable. The nurse snipped the stitches and took it out….I have to admit…it was a little gross……the tube in his neck was like 5″ long!! I was like, OMG! ha ha! She said “wait until you see when the wound drain tubes are removed!”….uhm….no thanks! I don’t have the stomach for nursing! But Paul said he didn’t feel a thing!
There was a student with the nurse when she removed this line. We were talking about how cool it is that this is a teaching hospital. The student was a little surprised to hear us say that and he mentioned that there have been patients that didn’t want him working on them. Really, there are a LOT of checks and balances with a teaching hospital. You have massive amounts of people checking and re-checking your charts and meds. There are a LOT of eyes on what is being done to the patients…..not to mention several heads making decisions on the best course of treatment. We like that idea!
The young student also mentioned he had the pleasure of being in the OR when Paul had his surgery and said he had the opportunity to ask Dr. Halff all kinds of questions about Paul’s anatomy and the Whipple procedure! ROFL! I got all excited knowing this kid had gotten to see my husband’s insides and he said it was really cool and educational! Now he gets to see Paul recover and get well again! So that was kind of neat 🙂
We also had some visitors! Our very good friend Kay (one of our accompanist in church and fellow Alto) drove up to visit and to take me to lunch! She got here about 11:30 and stayed and had a nice visit with Paul! She told him all about how his church choir is doing in his absence (all is well!) and how much everyone misses and wishes him well. Then Kay and I went to Black Eye Pea and I got to have a HUGE Cobb Salad! It was such a treat since I have been sustaining life on the chicken tenders from the cafeteria downstairs (O.o) and poor Kay was on a mission to get some vegetables in my system! It was delish!
While Kay and I were at lunch I got a call from the hotel I am staying at and they said I can STAY through the weekend!! Thank you Lord and all our good friends and family for offering and/or helping us out with my hotel situation! All resolved and I don’t have to ride a barka lounger in the hospital room!
Paul also spent some of his time working on The Producers score and surfing the net. He is able to move around pretty well considering!
Then to cap off his evening he got to visit with his friend Caleb. Caleb started as our real estate client several year ago and who knew! We ended up friends! So that really lifted Paul’s spirits since he hadn’t seen Caleb since he moved to the San Antonio area a couple of years ago! It was so great to spend time with him and hear all about his incredible family and how everyone is doing 😀
So that was a great way to end a great day! More tomorrow!
